Hall County property tax statements to be mailed Monday

Darla Eden, Hall County Tax Commissioner

With the arrival of property tax season this month, the Hall County Tax Commissioner's Office is preparing to issue approximately 92,500 tax statements for real and personal property. The 2021 Hall County property tax statements will be mailed Sept. 13 with a due date of Nov. 15.

In a concerted effort to save the time and resources of citizens, the Hall County Tax Commissioner's Office offers five ways to “Save A Trip and Skip The Line” to pay your tax bill. Utilizing the Tax Office’s enhanced website, making online payments at hallcountytax.org is the preferred method.

Online payment methods include E-Check ($1.50 flat fee) and debit/credit card (2.5% of amount plus $.30 cents per transaction). Most major credit cards are accepted. The newest method of payment is with PayPal Credit, which provides   a 6-month interest free, same-as-cash option to pay your property tax bill. The PayPal Credit payment option is a line of credit and is interest-free for 6 months if paid in full.

Another option is payment by mail, using the return envelope provided with the statement, to P.O. Box 1579, Gainesville, GA 30503. If you prefer a phone call, dedicated clerks at the Tax Office’s Call Center are ready to assist with credit and debit card payments at (770) 531-6950.

Citizens may also utilize the drop box located in front of the main doors of the Hall County Government Center at 2875 Browns Bridge Road. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, in-office payments will be limited to cash payments by appointment. All other payments will be directed to the drop box, where a receipt can be mailed or emailed to the taxpayer if requested.

For properties that changed ownership during the year, the official property owner on Jan. 1 of each year is responsible for that year's property tax. If property is purchased or sold after Jan. 1, it is the responsibility of the buyer and seller to determine who will pay the owed tax by the due date. You should refer to the closing documents or the closing attorney to determine tax liability for the current year.

For property owners with property tax escrow accounts, tax information is made available to mortgage   companies; however, the property owner is still responsible for ensuring taxes are paid by the due date.

If you own property within the city limits of Gainesville, Flowery Branch, Buford, or Oakwood, you will receive a separate city tax bill from that municipality in addition to the Hall County property tax statement.

The Hall County Tax Commissioner's website (hallcountytax.org) has up-to-date information on property tax payments on all parcels. The Tax Commissioner's Office bills and collects taxes. The Tax  Assessors’ Office determines property values. The Board of Commissioners, Board of Education, and        cities set millage rates. One mill equals $1 of tax for every $1,000 of assessed value.

The Hall County Tax Commissioner's Office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If there  are any questions or if assistance is needed, please contact the Hall County Tax Commissioner's Office by phone (770-531-6950), fax (770-531-7106), email (propertytax@hallcounty.org) or text (1-833-602-8497).
