PREVIOUS JUDICIAL EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT FROM FEB. 9, 2021:
Earlier this week, Chief Justice Harold D. Melton of the Georgia Supreme Court extended the current statewide prohibition on conducting jury trials due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under state law, the chief justice is authorized to declare an emergency for 30 days at a time. Justice Melton also states in this most recent order, however, that he anticipates lifting the suspension next month "assuming that conditions generally continue to improve."
As a result, all trials scheduled in Hall and Dawson Counties for the week of March 1 have been cancelled. In anticipation that this suspension will be permitted to expire in 30 days, Hall County Superior Court will also take steps this week to summons jurors for March 10, 2021. A final determination to proceed will be made at the time of the next order, and prospective jurors will be notified via the Clerk of Court’s information line.
In consultation with the District Attorney, grand jury proceedings will also resume in March assuming local conditions continue to improve.
