Hall County Fire Rescue promotes cooking and fire safety as the holiday season approaches

Fire Safety

Thanksgiving is only a couple of days away, which means it is important to keep cooking and fire safety at the forefront of your mind to ensure your family and home are safe this holiday season.

Kitchen Safety
While you are cooking, be sure to keep children away from the oven and stovetop. During the holidays, it is common for every stovetop eye to be occupied, which may be difficult to monitor at times. Unmonitored cooking can quickly cause a fire if food boils over on the stovetop or if food is left in the oven too long. Try to plan Thanksgiving meals ahead of time so you are not rushed, turn all pan handles away from the edge of the stove, and stay close by to prevent a kitchen fire.

Turkey Frying Safety
Deep frying turkey has become a popular way to prepare Thanksgiving and holiday meals, but it can be hazardous when not practiced correctly. Be sure to read the directions on the fryer you are using and follow them closely. Do not overfill the fryer with oil, and be sure the turkey is completely thawed prior to the frying process. Never fry a frozen turkey, as water and oil do not mix. If you are frying a turkey this season, be sure to cook outdoors in a cleared area, preferably on pavement. In the case of an accident, the oil needs to be far enough away from grass and your home so that the fire does not spread.

Smoke Detector Preparedness
As a reminder, please be sure to double-check your smoke alarm batteries in case of a fire or cooking incident. If you do not have smoke alarms, please call Hall County Fire Rescue at (770) 531-6838, and a fire crew will install two smoke alarms in your home free of charge. Smoke alarms save lives, so please prioritize your life and your family’s lives by having them in your home and working at all times.

Outdoor Fire Safety - Burn Permits
Many people burn leaves, branches and other debris during this time of year due to all of the foliage that gathers in the yard. This is permitted as long as a burn permit number is collected prior to burning. Burn permits may be requested online by entering the necessary information. Please keep in mind that burn permits are authorized in conjunction with the weather. For more information and burn permit guidelines, visit Hall County Government online.
