A portion of the new Tumbling Creek section of the Highlands to Islands Trail is now open for use. This portion extends the existing trail an additional quarter mile from the pedestrian tunnel under Atlanta Highway to the new pedestrian bridge near the University of North Georgia campus in Oakwood.
Once fully completed, the Tumbling Creek Trail section will connect Atlanta Highway to Landrum Education Drive, extending the Highlands to Islands trail network by 0.6 miles.
“We anticipate the full completion of this Tumbling Creek Trail section in the spring; however, we know how important this trail is to the community. With that in mind, it only made sense to open up the first section for citizens to enjoy as we head into the warmer spring months,” said Bill Nash, Assistant Director of Public Works and Utilities.
The portion of the Tumbling Creek Trail section that is now open includes a picturesque boardwalk, and parking is available via the Park and Ride Lot located at the intersection of Thurmon Tanner Parkway and Atlanta Highway, accessible from Thurmon Tanner Parkway and Frontage Road.
Once the full Tumbling Creek Trail section is complete, a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony will be held.
