Week of March 3rd to Set Bridge Beams At Oakwood Interchange Project (Exit 16/17)
Georgia DOT will be setting bridge beams for the Atlanta Highway Bridge over I-985. Crews will work overnights Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday if weather permits and set 24 beams into place over the interstate. Work will start at 10p.m., each night and continue to 5a.m., the following morning. On Monday, the work will occur over I-985 north, closing the inside lane. Tuesday, the work will finish over I-985 north and switch to I-985 south; the inside lane will be closed as crews work over the interstate. Wednesday, crews will finish over I-985 south. The lane closure will last from 10p.m. to 5a.m. and traffic will also be stopped for a few minutes at a time as the beams are lifted over the interstate and set into place. If wet weather is forecasted for Monday night the work schedule will shift to start on Tuesday and continue nightly through Thursday.
The speed limit on I-985 within the construction project limits -- north of the Elachee Bridge to about 1 mile south of Exit 16, State Route 53 -- has been lowered to 60 miles per hour. ALL fines are doubled in DOT work zones.
Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this project. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, construction, and delays due to bad weather. More information is available at www.511ga.org.
