The Hall County Sheriff Citizen’s Academy Alumni Association (HCSCAAA) held its Annual “Officer of the Year” Recognition Ceremony on October 25, 2011 in the Parlor of the First Baptist Church on Green Street. The President of the HCSCAAA, Kelly Bullock, welcomed guests and Sheriff Steve Cronic gave the Opening Prayer.
The nominees were as follows: Deputy Jamie Compton, Jail Division; Investigator Dan Franklin, Criminal Investigations Division; Deputy Randall McElreath, Court Services Division; Sergeant Jeff Shoemaker, Administrative Services, Training Division; and Deputy Glenn Watson, Uniform Patrol Division.
Deputy Glenn Watson was selected as the Officer of the Year and was presented a citation, framed by Frames You-Nique on Main Street, and a $600 Gift Certificate from The Foxhole Guns and Archery on Jesse Jewell Parkway. Deputy Watson was the prime mover in stopping two different crime sprees – a four bank serial robbery and a like number of residential burglaries – all committed by two different groups within a four-month period. His instincts “kicked in” when he observed something that didn’t quite seem right in each of the incidents.
During his remarks, Sheriff Steve Cronic called Sergeant Shoemaker and his family forward and recognized the entire family for their actions in rescuing a mother and her son from an overturned vehicle which was partly submerged in a mountain stream. Sergeant Shoemaker and his wife, Andrea, were presented a citation from Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle and State Legislator Butch Miller for their actions. The Shoemaker’s children, Andrew, Katie, and Ashley, were each presented Special Sheriff’s Badges for their part in the rescue operation.
Each of the runners-up also received framed citations and a $50 gift certificate from Longhorn Steakhouse on Browns Bridge Road. The HCSCAAA would like to thank all of their sponsors for their support of the Officer Recognition Program and their community-minded values. They are also grateful to the Chair of the Selection Committee, Kelly Attaway, Vic Dube for arranging the gifts, and Sandy Jordan for preparing the program.
