The Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) is comprised of the Domestic Violence Coordinator, and two or more deputies on each of the four patrol shifts who have been specifically trained to deal with domestic violence incidents. It is the mission of the Domestic Violence Unit to meet the needs of the community by education, responding to calls of service, documenting incidents, and enforcing the Georgia laws. The DVU also makes referrals for counseling, referrals for Temporary Protective Orders, testifies in court, and answers questions throughout the entire process. Through resources made available by the court system, counseling services, Gateway shelters, and victim advocates, this team offers a much more comprehensive solution to victims of Domestic Violence than what has been traditionally available. The unit as a whole works with the Northeastern Judicial Task Force against Domestic Violence to stop the abuse.
