Firefighters from Hall County and the City of Gainesville will distribute donated food and fire safety tips to 229 Meals on Wheels households starting on Thursday.
Thanks to a generous donation from the Georgia Mountain Food Bank, each senior will receive a box of non-perishable food items. Firefighters will perform a residential safety survey in the homes to identify possible fire hazards and install smoke detectors, where needed.
'It is the mission of Hall County Fire Services to fight fires, but also to prevent fires. Having this one-on-one contact with residents in their homes can result in a dramatic difference in fire prevention,' Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell said.
'We are grateful to have this opportunity to reach out to some of the most vulnerable residents in our community and educate them about fire safety,' Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said.
A total of 700 boxes have been donated, with 120 already passed out at the Senior Life Center, 229 to be delivered this week, and the remainder to be distributed next month.
The Georgia Mountain Food Bank, an Affiliate of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, serves nonprofit agencies in the Georgia Mountain region including Hall, Lumpkin, Forsyth, Dawson, and Union Counties. The Food Bank provides a vital link between sources of food supplies and hardworking community-based partner agencies who help get the food into the hands of families and individuals who need it.
