DEA Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Success
5/17/2012

On Saturday, April 28, 2012, the Hall County Sheriff's Office participated in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The event is a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) initiative to partner with local law enforcement agencies in an effort to prevent increased illegal pill abuse and theft and to encourage their proper disposal. Saturday's event was the fourth time the Hall County Sheriff's Office has participated in the effort.

Conducted by the Sheriff's Office at the Georgia State Patrol post on Cleveland Highway, by the Gainesville Police Department at their headquarters, and by the Oakwood Police Department at their offices, the event offered an anonymous way for citizens to dispose of unwanted or unused medications. The three sites netted a total of 58 pounds of prescription medications.

In addition to The DEA and local law enforcement agencies, the event was supported by Safe Kids of Gainesville-Hall County and the Drug Free Coalition of Hall County.

The DEA has tentative plans to continue the program by scheduling an event every six months, an effort the Sheriff's Office will continue to support.
