On March 2, 2012, a group of 1st graders at Chicopee Woods Elementary School were visited by a special guest as part of “Celebrity Reader Day.” Sheriff Steve Cronic spent part of the morning visiting with the students of Mrs. Montey Nix's class and reading Dr. Seuss's, The Lorax.
Celebrity Reader Day is part of the annual “Read Across America” program, celebrated in conjunction with Dr. Seuss's birthday, that emphasizes literacy and seeks to encourage success in young students. It gives them an opportunity to meet people in their community who have met their goals in life and share how they became successful. In addition to reading to the class, the program's guest readers also share their own school experiences and favorite books they enjoyed as a child.

“I enjoyed our visit and the opportunity to read to Mrs. Nix's class very much,” said Sheriff Steve Cronic. “We in law enforcement have a vested interest in the youth of our community. Members of the Sheriff's Office regularly participate in events such as this as a means of being involved and establishing positive relationships early with young people. It's a great way to interact with the kids and be a positive role model.”
