When winter weather hits North Georgia, follow this advice from Hall County Fire Services to keep your family safe:
-Do not drive over or play on any frozen body of water. The thin layer of ice will easily give way to the water beneath. If you have a pond or stream on your property, watch out for children and post warnings in the area.
-Home heating appliances are a primary cause of winter fires and should be used cautiously. Space heaters should be at least three feet from other objects. Remember to extinguish the fire in the fireplace and turn off space heaters before going to bed or leaving home.
-Never burn Christmas trees (branches or needles) in a fireplace or wood stove. Firs and pines have lots of sap, which can explode. The needles burn like tinder, quickly and fiercely. Flames can flare up out of control and send sparks flying across a room. They can also ignite creosote deposits in the chimney and cause a fire in the chimney.
-Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms in the home and regularly check the batteries. Develop a home escape plan and hold fire drills.
-All downed power lines should be considered "live." Call 9-1-1 and your local utility company if you see a downed power line.
