Initial Press Release

On October 24, 2013 at approximately 2:00 PM, Sheriff's Deputies responded to Chestnut Ridge Park in South Hall regarding a report of a body found. Upon arrival, Deputies learned that a crew that had been contracted to clean up the area had discovered what appeared to be human remains wrapped in a blanket inside one of the bathrooms.

Investigators responded to the scene and verified that the remains were in fact that of a human, but due the advanced state of decomposition they were not able to determine anything regarding gender, age, or identity. It appeared that the remains had been in place for an extended period of time.

The body has been transported to the Dekalb County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy.

Chestnut Ridge Park is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property that was closed to the public several years ago. It is currently under long-term lease by Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, but has remained closed.

This case remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff's Office, Criminal Investigations Division.
