North Georgia is facing many tough planning decisions at the beginning
of the 21st century. The most critical involve the environment and
specifically water resources. How will we manage our water resources
to ensure that there's enough for our communities, as well as the
people and wildlife downstream? How can we ensure the water we drink
is clean? How can we ensure that the water we return to the environment
is safe? What can we do to preserve the character of our streams and
rivers for future generations of people, plants and animals to enjoy?
The key to making good planning decisions for the future is having
good information about the present. In March 1999, the governments
of Hall and Forsyth counties and the City of Gainesville joined
forces to perform an assessment of the watersheds in their jurisdictions.
The goal of this regional watershed assessment was to identify what
affects the water, habitat and aquatic life in the area's streams
and rivers, predict how conditions might change over time and develop
management plans for each government to use to protect and enhance
water resources.
It has been important to the governments involved and to the state
Environmental Protection Division that this project considers the
water resources from a regional perspective. If a stream that runs
through two jurisdictions is managed well in one and not in the other,
there will be little benefit overall.
