What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)?
A sudden condition in which the heart unexpectedly and abruptly stops beating. Usually caused by Ventricular Fibrillation, a lethal heart rhythm in which the heart “shorts out” and fails to pump blood.

- Sudden Cardiac Arrest strikes 250,000-350,000 people in the United States every year.
- Only 5-7% of Sudden Cardiac Arrest victims live, 95% die.
- Chances of survival decrease 10% every minute.
- Death occurs within minutes unless treated.
- The only effective treatment for SCA is defibrillation.
- Automated External Defibrillators (AED) are small, portable, and can be operated by anyone with minimal training.

- AEDs are not available in many locations.
- Defibrillators are primarily carried only on Ambulances.
- AEDs should be available to Firefighters, Police Officers, and the Public at large.

- Hall County Fire Services is actively soliciting donations to purchase AEDs that will be placed on all Fire Apparatus and Law Enforcement vehicles in Gainesville and Hall County.
- Each AED costs approximately $3000.00
